PRoF University of Ghent award 2016

The second PRoF UGent award received 16 candidates from the international healthcare innovation landscape. As you will notice when browsing trough all applications we received, the topics are very diverse.

The Jury read all applications carefully and ranked them according to the criteria of the call. The top three was invited to present their case in a 15 minute speech at the symposium in Gent on May 25, 2016.

The symposium started with a warm welcome from Jan Van Hecke, Coordinator of the PRoF Consortium, who thanked especially for this day-to-day 7th anniversary, the very first participants of the PRoF initiative: Valerie Dhaeze, Piet Verhoeve, Ronny Pieters, Serge Lefevere, Chris Deroock and Paul Merlevede.
2 PRoF 2016 prof Peleman introduction
Followed by a presentation by the chair holder prof. dr. R. Peleman, who presented his vision on future healthcare challenges and how the PRoF consortium is developing solutions for these challenges.
3 PRoF 2016 presentatie cycle through your past
Next the winner of l_ast year: "cycling through your past" explained how the concept evolved into a commercial product: Activate for health, written as "Activ84Health". (www.activ84health.eu)

During the development the Activ84Health team incorporated user testing and validation in order to design a solution fit for the elderly. The colours of the navigation arrows is especially adapted for maximum visibility for the target group.

Roel Smolders, the CEO, explained how winning the award in 2015 helped accelerating their plans and that the PRoF Chair Award created value beyond the prize money. The award also helpt to build credibility, peer support and last but not least: customers.
Unfortunately Herman Van Rompuy, former President of the European Council and chairman of the Jury, could not be present. However the PRoF consortium received a personal video message in which he addressed the attendees.
The core of the symposium were the three nominees that were invited to present their contribution in a 15 minute speech before the Jury and the audience.
The five nominees selected by the Jury, were:
  • Ghent Toolkit Upper extremity Prosthesis (GTUP), by Lode Sabbe
  • INGA wellbeing, by Nikla Lancksweert, Claire Robinson, Fiona Mc Greal
  • Automated Incontinence Monitoring for Elderly, by Candy Cumps, Bjorn Van Keymeulen
We like to especially thank for this PRoF Award 2016 edition:
